๐Summary๐
This book narrates the story of an inchworm that lives in a garden. This inchworm goes around her garden to measure different vegetables. She measures the different vegetables by taking loops. For each loop she takes it counts as one inch. But one day things started going wrong! Her measurements were not adding up. After trying to measure a cucumber she noticed that it was smaller than a loop and her body that measured one inch was to long for the measurement. During this difficult time she knew she had to use fractions in order to keep on measuring smaller veggies. Three more worms that heard the problem decided to help her. Each worm was a different fraction size and they served as smaller loops to measure the veggies. The four worms went on with the journey in the garden to measure correctly the different vegetables.
"No problem's to big, no fraction too small. By adding new worms, we can measure it all!"(pg. 30)

This book can be used to when teaching fractions and measurements. Some of the activities that can be done using this book are the following:
๐ Have students create their own "Inchworm" book with different fractions.
๐ Teachers can bring in different items, fruits or vegetables and have students make estimates of the measurements and then have the class measure them.
๐ The teacher can also have students measuring different items around room.
๐ The teacher can follow the same structure of the book by having students find different items in the room that measure 1 inch,1/2 inch,1/3 and 1/4(just as the worms) and have students use does objects to use as "loops" to measure different items.
Hey Elinor,
ReplyDeleteI really like your book. I like how the worm is an inch long and it used itself to measure everything. once fractions are introduced many students start to feel anxious and confused. Therefore, the irony implemented in the for the inch worms difficulties measuring smaller vegetables is relatable for the students whom struggle with fractions. I like your classroom idea on using the same structure of the book because right after reading it the students can actually do it and have the same experience of the inchworm.
